Most of us love sugar. Sugar enhances the taste of the food we eat. Having said that, we need to be mindful that consuming too much "added sugar" increases the risk of heart disease. Added sugar can be in the form of raw sugar, brown sugar, honey, fruit juice concentrates, among others.
The American Heart Association recommends (see table below):
No more than 6 teaspoons or 100 calories a day of sugar for most women.
No more than 9 teaspoons or 150 calories a day for most men.
No more than 9 teaspoons or 150 calories a day for most men.
To put these numbers in perspective, a regular soda contains added sugar equivalent to 8.75 teaspoons.
